WOODY WEDNESDAY

woody wednesday blue

Woody Allen has been my favourite filmmaker for as long as I have considered that I should have a favourite filmmaker. But as of January 2016, I’ve only seen half of his films; 23 out of 46 to be precise. While many of these have brought me great joy, not all have been enjoyable. Many I have no desire to watch again. After all, the true ‘irrational man’ is of course he who puts himself through middling, mediocre, miserable movies by Woody Allen out of principled devotion.

With such a discrepancy of opinion in this incomplete experience of his canon, can I make an informed decision on his status and legacy? I want to find out. In doing so, I also want to confront the qualities and context behind the man making these films to investigate whether I can continue to feel comfortable watching his work.

Starting in February 2016, I will watch all of Woody Allen’s films in chronological order (giving leeway for a cinema viewing of his 2016 and 2017 films, Café Society and Wonder Wheel, and including Play It Again, Sam to make it 49) and post reviews on Wednesdays. Because alliteration.

Will he remain my favourite filmmaker by the end of all this? (as of early 2018 he isn’t anymore – cheers Richard Linklater!) I’m nauseous.
